CoursesWhy do you want to learn English? How much English do you already understand? All our students are different. Some want to learn English to study or for work, others need it for social reasons. Some of our students are new to English, others can speak but not write it. Some just want to improve their pronunciation.We like to give our students what they want or need so our courses are flexible. How long your course takes will depend on you. Courses start on a Monday throughout the year. They can last anything from one week to a whole year. You don’t have to take exams if you don’t want to. However if you do want a qualification we can arrange it at an additional fee. Some people just want to practice their English in conversation classes.When you come to the college we will ask you to do a placement test. This will allow us to work out your level so we can put you in the right class. You progress to the next class when you reach that level, it doesn’t matter how many weeks you have been studying.We offer courses in the day time and evening. As a small college we are able to offer a very flexible programme with new courses whenever there is a demand. Our class sizes are small, never more than 15, usually less. Studying at the Learn UK is like becoming part of a family. We know all our students personally. Our tutors work hard to ensure you succeed. Many of our students return again and again for more courses. Several students have gone on to work for the college when they have completed their studies.We want our students to be happy so we will give you all the support you need to succeed. We’ll take care to ensure you are on the right course. We can help you to sort out somewhere to live. We direct you to other local services such as schools, health care and social groups. Course 5

IELTS Preparation. The International English Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally recognised English Language assessment. A score of 6 or above is usually required for international students who wish to study at a British university or college.This course will developAcademic and general EnglishAcademic skills and learning strategiesRevision in lexis, tenses and functionsResearch and presentation skillsExam techniquesHours of study2-5pm Mondays and Wednesdays. There is 10 minute break in each class so you will get 5 hours 40 minutes a week with your tutor. You will be expected to complete assignments as homework.Individual lessons can also be arranged. We recommend that you book a minimum of 4 weeks preparation before your exam.Teaching methodsSmall classes, maximum 8 students per class with one qualified teacher. The average class size is 6. Studying in the UKThe rules about studying in the UK are complicated. They change all the time. In general students from the European Economic Area have the freedom to study anywhere in the UK. There are more restrictions for other students. AccommodationIf you are to make the most of your studies you will need somewhere clean, safe and comfortable to live. What better way to learn the language than to live with a family which speaks English all the time? We work with London Host Families to find suitable, affordable homes within easy reach of our college. All the homes are close to transport links to other parts of London.London Host Families provides a choice of accommodation for a variety of budgets. Many people will live, and share some meals, with the family. Alternatively you may choose self catering accommodation. All homes are in pleasant areas close to public transport links. London Host Families visit every host family to ensure that the accommodation and welcome meets their high standards. They will make every effort to match each student to the right home whether for a short or longer stay.

Student Life

Student lifeWe are a small and friendly college. We encourage our students to make friends with each other and our staff whether that is in the classroom, kitchen or common room or at one of our social events. When the weather is good students are able to spend time in our courtyard garden.We organise parties to celebrate the end of a course. Each term our Director of Studies arranges a visit to places of interest in London. Other activities are arranged from time to time. We have good links with our local multi cultural community so we can tell you about other ways to meet people and have fun.The college is based in the centre of Hanwell. There is a range of shops, cafes and other facilities on our doorstep. We have agreed student discounts with some of the cafes and shops nearby and hope to offer discounted gym membership shortly.Many of our students choose to work part time during their studies and we can help you to find suitable job opportunities. Working is a great way to improve your English and to help with the expense of living in London.

Our facilitiesWe are a small college situated in two buildings on either side of the Uxbridge Rd. in the centre of Hanwell. Most of our classrooms are small which means that you are guaranteed to be taught in small class sizes. We have a little kitchen where staff and students can make tea and coffee. There is a microwave where you can cook or heat your lunch or a snack. If you prefer there are plenty of shops and cafes very close to college. In good weather you might like to sit in our courtyard garden.Students can book to use our computer room if no-one is using it. Study facilities are available in our student common room. Ealing has a good selection of local libraries some of which have computers and reference facilities. We are just 40 minutes by train from Heathrow airport and less than 30 minutes to central London. This means that you can live in a friendly local community with all of London’s attractions within easy reach. Check us out on this map.Ealing is home to people from all over the world. Wherever you come from you have a good chance of meeting people from your part of the globe. The town has a good shopping centre, lots of parks and open spaces, a theatre, many pubs and clubs. There are places of worship for most religions and transport links to all parts of the UK. Living in the suburbs is cheaper than living in Central London but you can still enjoy everything the city has to offer. Ealing has several rail and tube stations. Buses to and from central London run 24 hours a day. From Ealing you could be at St. Pauls in under 30 minutes and the Tower of London or Buckingham Palace in less than an hour. Shopping on Oxford St. is only 30 minutes away and London’s theatre land is within easy reach. Why not visit other parts of the UK? Windsor Castle and Oxford are about an hour’s journey. You could be in Bath within two hours. Stratford, York, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Brighton are all possible in a day trip. With flights from Heathrow or trains from St. Pancras you could be in Edinburgh, Paris or Rome in less than three hours. Studying in Ealing opens up a world of possibilities.

Meet some of our Students

Jingxi Zheng from the Szechuan province of ChinaJingxi spoke very little English when she came to London with her new husband. She has been studying at the Lifeline Learning Academy for two years. At the moment she is studying at Entry Level 3. She plans to progress on to the Intermediate course next.Jingxi describes the college as ‘like home’, ‘everybody is very helpful’. She says her teachers are very professional and help her with her grammar so that she can see progress every day.Living in London is a new experience for Jingxi. She has been surprised by how multi-cultural it is and pleased that nobody laughs at her English! She welcomes the opportunities available in London and enjoys fashion, shopping and visiting the movies with her friend. Eiver Larripa from Pamplona in SpainEiver came to London to work as a ‘live in’ au pair with a family in Hanwell. The college is just 10 minutes walk from her home. Eiver had studied English before coming to London but wanted to improve her speaking and listening. She is studying at Upper Intermediate level and hopes to get her 1st Certificate next summer.Although Eiver likes London and all the tourist places she does not want to live in the city centre as it is too crowded. She says Hanwell is a good compromise, a small place in a big city. Eiver has recently joined the Gym opposite the college in the hope of making new friends.Eiver studies four mornings a week in the college and, when she is not looking after her host’s son, she goes to the local library in West Ealing to study or she travels into central London; sometimes she goes to the gym. She describes learning at the college as very flexible ‘we don’t just follow the book’. She says that the Director of Studies consults students to discover what they want to learn and then he provides it. She says the management care that the students are happy.Abdolreza (Reza) Pirnia from Tehran, IranReza came to London for a week’s holiday in December 2008, unfortunately trouble at home left the family unable to return to Iran and seeking asylum in the UK. Reza and his wife were told that Ealing was a ‘nice place to live’ and so found themselves a house to rent in the Hanwell area of the town. Although both had studied English in Iran they felt that it was important to learn how to speak it properly so they started to look for a college. Reza says that, when they came to ask about courses at the Lifeline Learning Academy, it was like ‘being welcomed with open arms’. They signed up immediately.Reza is studying English level 1. He describes the courses he is doing in ‘British culture’, ‘Life skills for England’ and ‘Living with other nationalities’ as even more important. Lessons in body language and non verbal communication have been very helpful.Reza owned an engineering company back in Tehran. He plans to establish a business in England once his work permit comes through. Until then he keeps busy with his English course and with writing some engineering procedures in English and based on British standards. The Pirnia family want to make a good life for themselves in England. Whilst Reza and his wife study English at the Lifeline Learning Academy their two sons are settled in English schools. Mum and Dad set an example by sitting down to do their homework at the same time as their children.Reza describes Lifeline as ‘small with a big heart’. He is full of praise for the management, staff and students.Erhan Mehmed from BulgariaErhan came to England to study for a Masters but realised that he would need to improve his English to do a course at that level. His cousin recommended the Lifeline Learning Academy and he has been very pleased with the college. He likes being part of a small class which allows him good interaction with his teachers.Erhan describes London as ‘amazing’ with so many things to do such as concerts, museums and events. He says people are kind and surprisingly friendly. He is impressed that people are from ‘everywhere’ but speaking a common language. Erhan studies four mornings a week and when he’s not studying he works as a Barista at Costa Coffee in West Ealing. He has found that work gives him a chance to practise his English.Erhan still plans to study for a Masters degree but now feels that he has the English skills to cope. He feels that learning English has opened up many opportunities, ‘the whole world speaks English so when you speak English the whole world is your oyster’.

Meet some of our Staff

Linda HarveyAfter nine years Linda is the longest serving tutor at the Learn UK Ltd. A chance meeting with Principal, Judy Wellington, in the steam room at the local gym inspired Linda to study for her CELTA qualification. When she’d qualified Judy offered her a job. Now her only complaint is that she would like to teach more classes. Linda currently teaches level 1 but has also taught Entry level 3.Linda loves teaching. She says, ‘it’s never boring and I’m never boring’. Linda believes that every day can be like a party. She has such good relationship with her students that she is Godmother to the son of two of her students.Linda knows what it is like to study as an adult. She left school at 14 and describes herself as a ‘girl of the 60s. It was only in her 40s that she decided to study for a degree. Linda graduated from Brunel University with a 2.1 in English Literature and then went on to study a foundation course in acting. Like many teachers Linda says she has learned a lot about herself from teaching. She likes people and gets her thrills from seeing people improve and learn to cope speaking in English. Her enthusiasm is infectious. Cinderella Gill Cinderella comes from Lahore, Pakistan. She came to England in 2002. In 2005 she passed her CELTA exam (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) and joined the teaching staff at Learn UK in 2007.Cinderella teaches on ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages, IELTS (International English Testing System) and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) courses. She loves working with adults and seeing students make progress. She likes to see students go from no English to reading simple books just a few months after joining her class. She says, ‘investing in students’ lives makes me really happy’. The only thing she doesn’t like about her job is the amount of paperwork she has to do for lesson observations!Cinderella loves learning. She has gained a Masters in TEFL at Reading University, CELTA in 2005 and she is now in her final year of a DTLLS qualification (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector). Next year she plans to take her GCSE in Mathematics so that she can go on to get Qualified Teacher Status. Cinderella is certainly living to her belief that teachers should be a role model for their students.‘Teachers play a very important role, they need to support and engage their students so that they want to come to college’, says Cinderella. She likes to help her students celebrate their events such as birthdays, festivals, achievements or anything else worth celebrating, ‘this makes classes fun’, she says.Semra Rashid Semra is the college receptionist. She will probably be the first person you meet. She joined the college as a student in October 2008. Semra has a Masters Degree in European Public Administration so she is the ideal person to be our receptionist. She says her job is easier because she is from Bulgaria, she is of Turkish origin and she speaks English. This makes it easier to communicate with students. She says it can sometimes be difficult to understand people who don’t yet speak English but always tries to help people.Semra loves her job. She says that Principal, Judy Wellington is ‘the best boss ever’ and that the students and staff are kind and nice people who get on really well. Semra really enjoys the college parties. She likes the fact that the college is small and everybody knows and helps each other. She says new students often say ‘We should have known about you before’ because they find the college so friendly and helpful.In her spare time Semra is secretary of Drayton Manor High School Parent Teacher’s Association. However she doesn’t have a lot of spare time with a son to bring up and her job at the college.Julie MatthewsJulie is our Welfare Officer. She loves to help people and encourages students to have the self confidence to help themselves. It is Julie’s job to make our students feel safe and supported and she loves her job. Whatever problem you have Julie is available to help. You might need assistance to find childcare or somewhere to live, with a legal issue or with a relationship. Julie will support you herself or tell you how to get help. Whatever advice you need you can rely on Julie to treat you with respect and in confidence.In her spare time Julie helps to run a charity providing social care for old people. There are regular parties and events including one on Christmas Day. Julie also gives time to a local dance school for children with special needs and regularly looks after one of the children to give the family a break. Julie is a key player in our team and ensures that our students have the support they need to be able to study and enjoy their time in our college.

Judy Wellington Judy WellingtonLearn UK grew out of an idea Judy had when she was working for the Commission for Racial Equality. Judy’s job involved travelling all over Europe and every where she went people wanted to practice their English. She realised just how important the ability to speak English is and that it can provide people with a ‘Lifeline’.Judy started to teach English voluntarily when her children were young. She found that there was a bigger demand than she could cope with on her own so she recruited another tutor and then another and so the school grew. At first the school rented rooms in a local church and then a cafe before taking on the current premises. In the future Judy hopes to move Learn UK to larger premises so that all classes can be on one site.Judy believes that we all learn together. She has always felt that the most important aspects of her business are customer service and staff relations. If tutors are happy they will work hard with their students. If students are happy they will learn well.Judy is still as full of enthusiasm for her job as ever. She says ‘it’s not like work’. She loves the fact that no two days are the same, that there are always new challenges to be dealt with. She really enjoys ‘the window on the world’ that Learn UK students give her through sharing their culture, food, problems and ambitions. In fact the only aspect of her job that she doesn’t like is that she can’t always solve her students’ problems.Judy lives life to the full. She enjoys the theatre, good food and wine and sharing dinner parties with her friends. She keeps fit by dancing and going to the gym and she attends church regularly. But the most important aspect of her life is her family and she sees her staff and students as an extension of that family.

Anthony Smith

Anthony SmithTony first started teaching English when he was doing Voluntary Service Overseas in Afghanistan and realised that he had found his career. Although Tony’s degree is in history he chose to teach English because it is a skills based subject and he likes to see the improvement students make.Tony spent many years teaching in secondary schools and specialised in teaching new arrivals to the UK to understand enough English to be able to join main stream classes. When he retired from teaching in Secondary Schools he joined Learn UK to teach adults. He describes the job as his ‘lifeline’.Tony sees his job as making sure that tutors have what they need, learners are pleased with their progress and that the buildings are properly equipped. Tony still enjoys teaching and, as well as his own classes, he will often teach for other tutors so they can spend time with individual students. He believes that it is important to find out what students want and need and to provide it even if it is not in an exam syllabus.Tony really enjoys working with the wide range of students who attend the Lifeline Learning Academy. He believes that it is important to help students adapt to living in England and will do all he can to help people adjust to what can be a very different culture. He particularly enjoys sharing what London has to offer by organising trips for staff and students.In his spare time Tony enjoys walking, particularly around London. Every week he uses his day off to explore a different part of London which he describes as still a collection of towns and villages.
